CHAPTER V
SOMETHING RIGHT
PART XVI59
We could be morethan just amazing.
Amazing
‘Simon! Reallyno more records?’
‘No more.’
‘Only one? Whatabout <Beautiful World>?’
‘Only one.’
‘But think aboutit Simon! Gravity Tour soon, but only released ONE record?!’
‘&<Gravity>--that’ll be a GREAT album! The BEST EVER! Only ONE record?!’
‘Enough.’
‘Oh Simon! Wecan’t go on like this!’ shouted Mark, ‘<Safe> only got the 10th place!’
‘Yeah it’s theworst rank ever!’
‘What’s so manyrecords for?’ Simon said, ‘You have so many fans & they WILL buy youralbums anyway, what do we append so much money & time on MVs &propaganda of the records?’
‘SIMON!’ Markslammed the door & left.
‘How can you sayso? They’ll buy the album that’s true, but we can’t muddle through it ‘cause ofthis! They’ll buy them that’s ‘cause they love us, they trust us! Now you justtreat them this way?’
‘No more words, just one record. You understand?’
‘NO WE DIDN’T!’Nicky turned around, about to get away. Shane & Kian followed.
‘Where’re yougoing?’
‘IT’S NONE OFYOUR BUSSINESS!’ Nicky was really angry, voice louder & higher than usual, echoing in the room.
He rushed outalong the hallway, two followed.
‘Nix!’
He turned back,it was Mark calling.
‘We gotta leaveSyco you know,’ said Mark, they were gathering in his room, ‘or we’ll see thedeath of this band.’
‘How can he sayTHAT! You heard what he said--“You have so many fans & they WILL buy youralbums anyway, what do we append so much money & time on MVs &propaganda of the records?” I believe if we go on like this the fans’ll soonall disappear.’
‘It’s US whoshould control this band, not HIM.’
‘But he has thepower, we’re only a band under his company.’
‘Why must we beunder HIS company? Now he’s destroying us!’
That’sright--why must they be under HIS company?
That night, Kianwent downstairs, sitting outside. Still the quiet night, high on the sky wasstill stars shining & the silvery new moon. But just a lonely white figure,no one else--he didn’t bring the guitar, maybe he wouldn’t be woken up again.
He called Louis& told him everything, what Simon said & what they think. He knew ifthey go on this way, the band & even their friendship would be in danger.
Things weregetting worse before the tour in Britain. Backstage was just a mess. Shoutingcould be heard everywhere. They refused to get out of the dressing room.
The performancewas alright, but after that, Mark & Shane directly went home in helicopter. As they said, no matter what happened, they gotta go home.
It was true thatthey couldn’t spend all their time on this band. The host work in 2FM wastaking up Nicky more & more time, & his programmes were always popular.Kian’s girlband Wonderland which Jodi was in toured with them, two bands lefthim only four hours everyday for a rest. & Mark’s writing new songs whileNicole was ready to go to school in Sligo. Now Simon kept like this, they feltenough being in the band. Time to terminate--terminate the contract with Syco,or terminate the band.
‘You don’t havetime?’
‘No I SAID I’mbusy.’
‘You’re ALWAYSBUSY! When can you be FREE?!’
‘If YOU had somuch work YOU’d be busy now AS WELL!’
‘ANYWAY AS YOULIKE!’
‘What’s called“AS I LIKE”?! It’s YOU who called me!’
‘OH I DON’TCARE! GO ON BUSY WITH YOUR THINGS!’
Hung up.
That’s howthings were going--the calls those days always ended with shouting. Mark saidhe’s gonna quit, several times. They were afraid--they remembered their promisewhen Brian left.
‘We gotta leaveSyco really! Or I’ll quit, like Brian!’
‘It’s enough!How many times’ve you said so?!’
‘Shane!’ Kianstopped his complain, ‘Mark do you remember what we promised when Brian left?’
‘I do but thinkabout it! I’ve written FOUR songs for the album! It’s gonna be the greatestalbum! & <Where We Are> as well--so great that we could’ve releaseTHREE records for them each! Now only ONE?!’
‘I’ve calledLouis & told him about it.’
‘What can Louisdo? It’s Simon’s company!’
‘Shane you don’tunderstand what I mean! It IS Simon’s company but we can LEAVE SYCO & SIGNA NEW CONTRACT WITH A NEW COMPANY! You got it?’
‘Oh God youthink everything’s that easy as you thought?’
‘Where’s Nix?’suddenly interrupted Kian.
‘Oh heavenknows! Maybe 2FM or whatever--when can he SPEND SOME TIME on this band?!’
‘Shane! It’senough!’
‘THAT’S WHAT ITHOUGHT--ENOUGH! YOU GO ON!’ he got out without closing the door.
‘He--’
The phone rang.He said sorry & picked up the handset.
‘Yes Jodi?’
‘Oh well...okayI’m coming.’
‘Wonderland?’asked Mark.
‘Yes.’ hequickly went out.
Finally, no onecould stand it anymore. No one had the mood to think about the band. Westlife, for the first time, became in danger.
‘Simon is ittrue?’ asked Louis.
‘Of course.’
‘One record?’
‘Yeah.’
‘Simon you gottathink about it. They’re all unsatisfied with it.’
‘One is enough! They have so many fans--’
‘Nix’s right, doyou still remember what he said? “They’ll buy the album that’s true, but wecan’t muddle through it ‘cause of this. They’ll buy them that’s ‘cause theylove us, they trust us. Now you just treat them this way?” “I believe if we goon like this the fans’ll soon all disappear.” He’s right.’
‘But think aboutthe money! The time! You forgot the MV of <What About Now>?’
‘But it’s agreat success really. Fans love it. We’ve paid so we’ve made it. That MV--it’snot what every band can do.’
‘We’ve just paidso much & now again?’
‘Simon do youreally care about THEM or just MONEY? They’re working for dreams, for all thefans; but what’re YOU doing? You only know money!’
‘Without moneywhat can they do?’
‘Listen Simon,if you insist being like this, I really gotta c**ider taking their advice.’
‘What advice?’
‘Leaving Syco.’
So March 14th,after ten years cooperating with Simon Cowell, their contract with Syco wasterminated.
Things wentpeace again, everyone was so happy--they felt they were free now. When theGravity Tour ended, they could begin a new life without Simon, a new life inwhich THEY could take control of their songs & design their future. It’sjust like they were injected fresh blood.
Soon they signeda new contract with RCA, another company of Sony’s. Louis had a meeting withthe band. It seemed their fate was turning, the band’s future was ensured &the friendships between the members were recovering.
On March 25th,the performance in the familiar LG Arena in Birmingham. That evening, they werediscussing the details about their next album with RCA. Wonderland was warmingup, five executives were listening to the four talking about releasing ananthology. Louis was on the phone, expecting anxiously to know how the meetingwas going on.
‘We can choosethree songs for it?’
‘Yes, threeeach.’
‘Oh iontach!’
‘& four newsongs?’
‘Yes, four. We’ll give the work to John Shanks. He’s in LA.’
‘& records?’
‘Three of thefour.’
‘Three records!Then that’s it?’
‘Yes, a<Greatest Hits>, a tour for it, & relax.’
‘Two years?’
‘Two years.’
Seven o’clock. They nearly became crazy--everything was new now, & so enjoyable.
‘Nix?’ calledShane in the dressing room after the concert.
‘What again?’
‘Come here.’
‘You’ve asked meto “come here” for six times you know, it’s the seventh now.’
‘Not a questionthis time, come here.’
‘What?’
‘Pinch me.’
Nicky put hishand on Shane’s forehead.
‘I said PINCHme, what’re you doing?’
‘Not fever, thenwhat’s wrong?’
‘You!’ Shanetook the hand down & pointed at his arm, ‘Here, pinch.’
‘Here better.’Nicky smiled, pinched his face.
‘Hey you!’ Shanestared a glance at him.
‘Then what doyou wanna do to get me here & ask me to pinch you?’
‘Oh I forgotit--it’s real! Oh it’s real!’
‘I think adoctor’ll be useful now.’
‘Don’t you feelhappy about the new contract? It’s just like a dream!’
‘Calm down, we’restill discussing the details of it you know. We’re still trying, we can’t signa lifelong contract with who we don’t know at all.’
‘Of course westill gotta see if it really fits us, or if it’s really a home for Westlife. But the new album! <Greatest Hits>! I’m going crazy I think--it wasreally great! We can do what we wanna do!’
It seemed to bean omen that they wouldn’t be satisfied with just sitting there & letothers decide what they should do. After the four full-house concert at O2Arena, the Gravity Tour ended. Then they flew to LA for the newsongs--<Lighthouse><Beautiful World><Wide Open><Last Mileof the Way>. Mark & Shane wrote two songs.
Yet what Shanesaid in the dressing room came true in July. Louis got a call from RCA whowanna have a long cooperate with Westlife. They offered a 500£ contract, including the plan of several new albums.
‘Hey boys whatdo you think of it? I felt it’s wonderful!’
‘Well...Louisyou see, it’s not that good as you thought.’
‘If we work asit planned, we’ll gotta record new songs in 2012 & start touring again in2013.’
‘Working twoyears without a rest--I’m afraid it won’t get good results you know.’
‘We’re busyenough & tired enough.’
Louis was kindof disappointed, but he’s thought about they’d answer this way. He understoodit. They used the best tour buses, the five-star hotels, the first classes--butthey weren’t young boys, they had their resp**ibilities, they had families& other works. The six-week Asian tour is beginning, working for anothertwo years, they couldn’t stand it.
‘Our child’ll beborn soon.’ said Kian.
‘I really missmy family.’ added Nicky, ‘I gotta go back to see them.’
‘Me too.’ saidShane.
Mark continued,‘I have my songs to write. I’m going a new direction. & I have many otherthings to do.’
‘Think about itkids, & tell me your dicision.’ said Louis. He guessed they may refuse it,& that’s true. They called him later about it. & he has guessed whatwould happen then--he knew them so well. So many years they’ve gone through, they’ve grown up together, now everyone wanna turn their attention to their ownfamily & carreer.
‘Should we keepthis band on Kian?’
‘I felt tiredtoo.’
‘There’s a webtracker who threatened my family in Sligo,’ Shane went on, ‘I really missedthem.’
‘I really have afamily now, a wife & a baby.’ said Kian, ‘& The Voice Of Ireland youknow that, I was invited there for a new job.’
‘I’m alreadyflooded by all kinds of job invitati** you know, since I became the guest DJat 2FM.’
‘You DO have thegift.’
‘& I missedmy family you know, Gina & my twins.’
This night in KualaLumpur, they did as they promised when Brian left--now everyone wanna leavethis band, they knew what they should do--it’s obvious, & easy.
Louis respectedtheir decision. They were always like this, they’d never be forced to dosomething. They COULD go on, & he has planned to release a cover albumafter a holiday. But since they all wanna do their own things, they’ve chosento end everything in their own way. When they announced it, both themselves& the fans were sad, but anyway the goodbye was honourable. Who knows whatwill happen next?
Now in a pub inKuala Lumpur, four young men from a beautiful little country called Irelandwere drinking, talking, having fun. Couldn’t imagine they’ve just decided todisband the best band ever. But the decision would sure bring happiness, it’stheir own things.
Louis knew itclearly that if they just did nothing but enjoy all kinds of happiness withtheir family, they could still live a rich life. & they’d be gratified thatthey came from nobody in a little place yet now became the greatest boybandafter Beatles. They were brave, brave to take the resp**ibilities of theachievements & the end. They’ve thought about an end in 2009, <UsAgainst the World> ranked only the 8th, but they wanted all the recordsranked at least the 5th. He thought it was a big mistake to disband at first, but when Kian announced it & told him, he accepted. He knew they could’vego on for as long time as they want, but in a band there were always manylimits. Some people said they couldn’t have girlfriends, so that the fans wouldthink they could get them. He said he felt it was an end, he felt himself kind of hating Brian. But at last the successful tour told them that their place was still there.Nicky felt so at first as well, but soon they found they still loved Brian--notjust loved the Bryan in Westlife, but Brian McFadden himself. Louis taught themto be strong, he saw them went through all the things & became what theywere today. They helped each other to become somebody from nobody, he thoughthe could little by little get used of the days without the boys. They werereally like his children--he’s seen them grew up, now he’s gonna see themcreated their own worlds.
Gotta say, somecountrymen & Dubliners, well done huh?

PARTXVII60
I wanna thank you for the love that you gave me.
Thank You
‘What? Mark you...’
‘We’ve decided.’ he smiled.
‘You were engaged weren’t you?’
‘You’ve just said you’d get married after the farewell tour!’
‘That’s true--that WAS true, but now we think we can’t keep our words.’
‘Oh why?’
‘Well that’s a secret.’
It’s a private thing, wasn’t it. They couldn’t be lovers, but friendswas good still. He remembered that June in 2008, at Croke Park, he thankedKevin & said he loved him; he nearly couldn’t finish the words, the fanscheered & screamed. He was choked.
The years were amazing, but it has ended. They still loved each other& felt thankful to everyone who’s supported them--including themselves.
Memories were beautiful, & so was the future. It’s good enough, wasn’t it.

CHAPTER VI
WORLD OF OUR OWN
Soon they’d go onto the familiar stage in Croke Park & perform all theold songs for the last time. Sad, loath to part, but excited & expecting tonight.
Crazy fans, continuous screams...Little rain, but the Park was like on fire--TODAY!

In the dressing room. The concert ended, perfectly.
‘Well done Nix.’ Shane patted gently on the shoulder--where he’d patted somany times & where he’d taken a nap, ‘d shed tears, & ‘d lain prone on whenhe’s drunk...
‘You too.’ replied with a faint smile, not so chilly as usual, but with appreciation.
His steps stopped there--for the smile, the clear blue eyes--
‘Want some coffee?’ like a magician, Nicky took out two glasses, two packetsof Mendeling, a tube of cream & a bottle of Irish Whiskey.
‘You can...’
‘Learnt from my Dad.’
‘But hot water?’
‘See the thermos? & the coffee pot.’ he pointed at a corner without lookingup.
‘& no sugar?’
He took out a box from a drawer, ‘Cubes here, & salt in the packet.’
‘What about the alcohol lamp?’
‘Turn around, & matches & lighter.’
‘Oh mo Dhia! You just said COFFEE!’
‘It IS coffee.’
‘But--’
‘Now close your mouth if you want it tasty, we’re starting. Still the words,’he smiled, ‘quiet, or go.’
‘S never seen Nicky made coffee--Irish Coffee, more didfficult--he watchedwith rapt attention. He seemed really skilled, every step wasn’t fast, but relaxed& smooth. The whiskey burnt in the glasses, short, but so amazing--the beautifulblue, he looked into the absorbed eyes.
When Nicky was ready to add the cream--he suddenly stopped & embracedhim, hands covered his eyes, ‘Turn around will you?’
‘What’re ya gonna do?’
‘You’ll know it later. Now be obedient, turn around.’
Treating him like a child, what’s wrong today? He could only hear silence, what’s he doing? Couldn’t see anything--in fact not dared to open his eyes--he felthimself gonna fall down, but didn’t have the courage to ‘break the rule’; &anyway, it’s kind of interesting waiting, isn’t it.
‘Is it okay Nix?’
‘Want some teardrops?’
‘It’s not farewell Nix.’ he turned around & clasped him from the back--hesaw it. On the dark coffee, white words written with cream. Familiar handwriting, natural free but graceful--he held him tighter.
Freed a hand to pick upthe cream, Shane put his head on Nicky’s shoulder & c**cientiously wrote withthe tube on the coffee without cream.61

Fragrance filled the dressing room--coffee or perfume?
應該左邊是Nix寫的Le Grá=With Love. 右邊是Shay寫的Dom Freisin=Me Too. :P

CHAPTER VII LAST MILE OF THE WAY
Croke Park, the last bow.
Today, after fourteen years, they were saying goodbye to all thefans--Westlife was becoming history.
Fourteen years, they created a legend, called Westlife. Now they came tothe summit, they’d better disappear now, left with the most beautiful memories.

AFTERWORD
Thanks
II.Particular Thanks
iii.
vii.
viii.Great greatthanks to Westlife, the legend itself, & the ones who created the legend, special thanks to you all. Go raibh míle maith agat & gráim thú.
III.
